Morning Commute Shenzhen, China

These young professionals stream past my window every morning on their way their high-tech jobs. Microsoft, Tencent, Baidu and other tech companies, start-ups and maker spaces are my neighbors in Shenzhen, China’s designated hotbed of innovation. Today’s torrential downpour does not deter them as I watch the seemingly never-ending procession of umbrellas from the dry perch of my 16th story window seat. This city draws dream-chasers from all over China hoping for a brighter future and no rain is going to stop them.

As an American living in China, people often ask me what I love about China. It is pictures like this. Energy, determination and open hearts looking for the new thing, a new hope, the fulfilling of dreams. This is why am here, to come alongside my Chinese friends as they seek for the better things in life (which we all deep-down know cannot be found in even the hippest of high-tech jobs.) I hope they achieve dreams that are immeasurably more than they could ask or imagine: true love that satisfies, real life that fulfills.

Months ago, at the height of the pandemic in China, the street below my window was desolate during rush hour. Now the sidewalks are packed again with everyone walking in the same direction, coming from the subway station at the gate of my apartment. Around 6pm the train will reverse as everyone heads home. Despite the rain today, they are pressing on.

Friends, we have all faced a lot of challenges in 2020, and the downpour just seems to keep coming. Let’s grab our colorful umbrellas and keep moving forward looking in faith for the better day, the higher hope, the truer love. And as you walk through your day, please know that you are not alone. The One who made you, knows you and loves you is by your side.

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13

With faith, hope and love from China,
