Managing Conflicts between Members

With so many people and so much communication in our Community, quite often our Group experiences conflicts between Members. Conflict may arise from a difference of opinion, misunderstanding, confusion or controversy.

Respectful disagreement and debate is acceptable in our Community. However, if a disagreement turns disrespectful or breaks our Group rules, our Admin’s actions can help the Group get back on the right track.

In order to keep the Group calm and peaceful, when a conflict occurs, our Moderators step in as Mediators as soon as possible. When conflict such as a heated conversation in a thread occurs, our Admins act quickly. We do our very best to get involved before the situation escalates. From our experience, speedy action helps reset the tone of the conversation and lets Group Members know we care by being present.

If we see a thread that has gone off track, or someone does break a rule, we usually do one or all of the following :

  • Engage with the Member in the comments and try to reset the tone of the conversation.
  • Make a comment on the feed stating what rule the Member has broken, why it is not allowed, and ask them to review the rules. Then, we may close comments on the thread.
  • Leave the thread visible so others may learn what happened. This way the person that posted will definitely see it, as well as others that will also read and may be educated about the matter as well.

If we have a person in our Group that is malicious towards other people and Admin doesn’t do anything about it, other Members may be led to believe that this type of behavior is acceptable. If this is the content that they see in our Group, they’ll want to leave. This is a scenario we would like to prevent.

We know that Group Members take our actions as Admin seriously. When tensions and emotions run high, our Moderators also take a moment, before posting, to think about how a new Member would react to what we are about to say. We guide our Moderators to model the behavior they wish to see in our Group.

If Moderation isn’t working, we may consider temporarily muting the Member. We allow some time for the discussion (and the Member) to cool down. When all else fails, we may also feel empowered to remove Members from our group.

We were initially unsure about removing people from the Group, but realized it was sometimes necessary. As Admin, we uphold the culture and rules of our Community. Members appreciate our Moderation, including the removal of people who do not follow our Community’s rules.

Our group is so vast, that we rely on the Members to assist us in moderating the feed. We encourage people to report heated conversations, by using the “Report to admin” tool to flag posts that need Admin Moderation.
