Dad’s Birthday

It’s 3:15 in the morning here in Cyprus on December 13.

I set my alarm, as I always do, to wake up and do some work, and I realized that I can’t go back to sleep without sharing with you, my friends, that today is my Daddy’s birthday.

This time last year, I was in Scotland, moving him out of sheltered accommodation in to a residential care home.

Before I moved from there to here permanently in 2017, I had him write his will, and prepay for a funeral if anything should happen to him while I was so far away.

But I was lucky enough to fly back to Aberdeen to visit him each Christmas, which was a good thing, as he continued to suffer with ill health. Being there with him meant so much to me, as when sad fate intervened and finally claimed him exactly two months after his 88th birthday, (right before Lockdown), I was able to hold his hand and tell him it was okay to just let go.

This photo appeared in the “memory” of my phone just yesterday. It is of his room at the new facility, where he stayed for only three weeks, before he fell that final time.

He never left that room to enjoy the tiny garden right outside his window.

I miss him very much.

Happy Birthday, Dad. I like to think I’ve done you proud.
